A traditional Panchakarma programme in Goa
Panchakarma is one of the important therapeutic approaches of Ayurveda, traditionally centred on carefully prepared cleansing and eliminative procedures followed by a period of restoration.
It is not a standard treatment package and it is not simply a collection of Ayurvedic massages.
At SWAN, every Panchakarma programme begins with a consultation with our resident Ayurvedic doctor. Your constitution, present condition, digestive capacity, strength and individual requirements are considered before the treatment programme is prescribed.
The therapies you receive are therefore chosen for you by the doctor.
The two week programme provides time for the three broad stages of Panchakarma to unfold: preparation, the main therapeutic procedures and post treatment rebuilding.

Panchakarma is a process, not a treatment menu
The word Panchakarma refers to five therapeutic actions described within the Ayurvedic tradition.
These include Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya and Raktamokshana.
Not every person is suitable for every procedure, and not every Panchakarma programme requires all five.
The Ayurvedic doctor determines which procedures are appropriate according to the individual’s constitution, condition and therapeutic requirements.
This individualised approach is central to authentic Panchakarma.
The purpose is not to complete a predetermined list of treatments. The purpose is to follow an appropriate therapeutic process under the supervision of an Ayurvedic physician.
Why two weeks?
Panchakarma requires preparation before the principal procedures and care after them.
A meaningful programme therefore needs more than a few days.
At SWAN, the two week Panchakarma programme allows time for the body to be prepared, the prescribed therapeutic procedures to be carried out and the post treatment period to begin before you return to your normal routine.
The exact duration and sequence may vary according to the individual and the procedures prescribed.
This is why Panchakarma at SWAN is approached as a residential therapeutic process, rather than a short Ayurveda detox holiday.
How the two weeks are structured
The programme broadly moves through three stages.
Purva Karma
Preparation
The body is prepared for the main Panchakarma procedures according to the doctor’s prescription.
This may include internal oleation, external oleation such as Abhyanga, and sweating therapies.
The purpose within the traditional Ayurvedic approach is to prepare the body for the principal therapeutic procedures.
Pradhana Karma
The main therapeutic procedures
The principal Panchakarma procedures prescribed by the doctor are carried out according to your individual requirements.
The procedures, sequence, duration and frequency are not fixed in advance.
Your treatment programme is determined by the Ayurvedic doctor and adjusted when necessary.
Paschat Karma
Post treatment care and rebuilding
The Panchakarma process does not end with the main procedure. The period that follows is important.
Food is gradually reintroduced according to the prescribed regimen, practice is kept appropriate to the stage of recovery and sufficient rest is given so that the body can gradually return to its normal routine.
This rebuilding phase is an integral part of the Panchakarma experience.

Panchakarma and Yoga together
At SWAN, Panchakarma takes place within a traditional residential Yoga environment.
Daily Yoga, meditation and pranayama form part of the wider rhythm of the programme, with Yoga Nidra and yogic study as per the schedule, and practice adapted according to the stage of Panchakarma and the doctor’s recommendations.
Yoga is therefore not added simply as another activity.
It provides a supportive daily discipline alongside Ayurvedic treatment, appropriate food, rest and periods of quiet.
During the programme, there may be days when your physical practice needs to be lighter or modified. The daily schedule is therefore followed with awareness rather than treated as a rigid timetable. Explore Yoga at SWAN.

Your daily rhythm during Panchakarma
Panchakarma requires a more conscious daily rhythm than an ordinary Yoga retreat.
A typical day may include meditation, Hatha Yoga, Ayurvedic treatments, appropriate meals, Yoga philosophy, Yoga Nidra, rest and periods of quiet.
The schedule below gives an idea of the residential rhythm.
| Time | Programme |
|---|---|
| 06:00 to 06:45 | Meditation |
| 07:30 to 09:00 | Hatha Yoga and asana |
| 09:10 onwards | Ayurvedic preparation or prescribed morning routine |
| 09:30 onwards | Breakfast |
| Morning | Ayurvedic treatment as prescribed |
| 11:30 to 12:30 | Yoga philosophy, Yoga Nidra or yogic study |
| 13:30 to 14:00 | Lunch |
| Afternoon | Ayurvedic treatment or prescribed rest |
| 18:30 to 19:00 | Dinner |
| 19:00 to 20:00 | Havan and Kirtan on Saturday and Sunday |
Havan and Kirtan are on Saturday and Sunday evenings only, not every day.
The timetable is indicative. Your treatment times, therapies, dietary requirements and daily routine are determined by the Ayurvedic doctor and may change according to your prescription and stage of Panchakarma.
Friday is the weekly day off from the regular Yoga schedule, while Ayurvedic treatment continues as prescribed.
Tuesday is the yogic kriya day and the regular asana schedule is adjusted accordingly.
Panchakarma in a natural setting
Panchakarma is traditionally understood as a process requiring attention not only to treatment, but also to food, routine, rest and the environment in which the person undergoes the programme.
SWAN is situated in Assagao, North Goa, amidst tropical greenery, mature trees and a quiet natural landscape.
The residential setting gives you space to step away from the noise and demands of everyday life.
Simple cottages, gardens, Yoga Shalas, Ayurvedic treatment spaces and a sattvic kitchen come together to create an environment conducive to a slower and more disciplined rhythm.
You are not simply coming to Goa for a series of treatments.
You are coming to live for two weeks within a carefully structured Ayurvedic and Yogic environment. Discover SWAN Ayurveda and Yoga in Goa.
Panchakarma, deep rest and rejuvenation
Although Panchakarma is distinct from a rejuvenation programme, the experience also includes periods of rest and recovery.
The pace is intentionally different from everyday life.
There is less stimulation, simpler food, regular routine, time for sleep and rest, and fewer of the distractions that normally occupy the day.
For someone arriving after a prolonged period of stress or an overstimulated lifestyle, this change of rhythm can be an important part of the residential experience.
The programme combines traditional Ayurvedic therapeutic procedures with Yoga, meditation, appropriate food, rest and a natural environment.
